A History of The Wide-Leg Pant

Fashion Through the Ages

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a lot of new trends as well as ones coming back around from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. While sometimes it can be a lot to absorb, we’d be lying if we said we aren’t enjoying them! It’s always so interesting to see past trends come back in style and see the new twist that the fashion industry puts on them.

One of our favorite trends that’s come back around, and has made itself quite prominent in the fashion industry, is the wide-leg pant. This style pant has been extremely popular since it first appeared in the early 1920s. Fast forward to present day, virtually every style of pant now has a wide-leg silhouette and we couldn’t be happier!

Wide Leg Pants: A History of Style and Comfort

The History of the Wide-Leg Pant

Making their first appearances in the 1920s, the first wide leg pants were in the form of lounge and pajama pants, worn by high society stars such as Coco Chanel at home while entertaining or lounging around the house. They typically hit just above the ankle with a straight cut and roomy fit. You’d often see styled with matching tops and jackets and after a while, the style became increasingly popular among other members of society.

Throughout the late 20, 30s, and 40s, the wide leg pant continued to become increasingly popular as wide leg beach pajamas, leisure wear, sports clothing, and work pants were adopted by women across the world. We began seeing actresses including Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, and Marlene Dietrich in the 1930s and 1940s, which made the pant style increasingly popular.

During World War II, beach pajamas went out of fashion due to rationing but the wide leg trend continued with sturdier fabrics including cotton twill, denim pants, and overalls. Post-war, modern fashion trends including pants were considered inappropriate by some proprietors causing women to fight these bans by wearing palazzo pants and culottes as evening wear.
