I couldn’t resist sharing the story behind the striped tee with you—let’s journey back in time to when it first started making waves…
The history of the striped tee…harking back to the 19th century
I find the history of stripes as a fashion staple so interesting—especially considering that the striped tee can be traced back to the early 19th century, when it was first worn by French sailors. Back then, this is what we would have typically called the “Breton stripe”, named after the northern Brittany coast of France.
However, there was more to this style than just stripes. The vertical stripes were used to help distinguish individuals from a distance, making it easier for crew members to identify each other on deck. The colors and width of the stripes were also used to indicate rank and position on the ship.
Therefore, these designs were infused with meaning, which adds to the interesting heritage of stripes in fashion choices.
Stripes go modern thanks to a fashion icon…and beyond
While doing my research on striped tees in history, another famous fashionista entered my radar.
What I uncovered was that the striped tee as we know it today, was first popularized by Coco Chanel. This style icon, who needs almost no introduction, played a major role in making stripes a fashion essential. In 1917, she began selling sailor-inspired striped tops in her boutique, which were a hit with her customers. She was inspired by the stripes worn by the sailors she saw in the French coastal town of Deauville, where she had a boutique. Her use of stripes helped to put the nautical style front and center on the fashion scene of the time—and it became synonymous with her designs.
Chanel, though, wouldn’t be the only famous face to inspire striped tee fashion.
The 1950s and 1960s saw the rise of female beauties such as Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who contributed to the iconic status of the striped tee. Their influence popularized the preppy, coastal style of the shirt, cementing it as a staple in American fashion. To this day, the striped tee remains a popular choice.
Extra meaning gets infused into the striped tee
One thing that amazes me about the history of the striped tee, is how it could again carry a powerful message to new generations.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the striped tee was adopted by the counterculture and youth movements, becoming a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity. This association was further solidified in the 1980s and 1990s, when the striped tee was worn by punk rockers and other alternative subcultures. The striped tee was a symbol of freedom, rejecting the traditional and conservative values of their parents.
It is easy to see: the striped tee was the ultimate statement maker!
Looking ahead
Fast forward to today, the striped tee continues to be a popular choice among fashion enthusiasts. It has evolved from a functional piece of clothing for navy seamen, to a versatile and stylish piece of clothing that can be worn by anyone, anywhere.
The history behind striped tees was such a joy for me, as a designer to explore—there is so much beauty and meaning in fashion when we open our eyes to it!
